Take Two
Redwood National and States Park has been a popular location for many films. The Endor scenes for Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi were filmed in the Tall Trees Redwood Grove in the northern part of Humboldt County. Some scenes from The Lost World: Jurassic Park along with the movie Outbreak were filmed near Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The park was also used to represent Jurassic forest of Colorado in Walking with Dinosaurs in Time of the Titans and in Dinosaurs Alive.
In and Out
The famous drive-through tree is located in Redwood National and State Park. The Wawona Tree used to be a giant sequoia in Yosemite National Park when it fell over in 1969 due to heavy snowfall. There are three redwood drive-through trees on the coast, Klamath Tour Thru Tree, Myers Flat Shrine Tree, and Leggett Chandelier Tree. Since the trees are all private businesses a small fee is charged.
Up up and Away
Redwood trees take over most of the park. Did you know that Redwood trees can reach up to 300 feet or higher. Their large trunk can grow to more than 20 feet wide as well.
Lions and Elk and Bears, OH MY!
Redwood National Park is the home for many wild lions, bears and elk.
Elk once ranged over most of the United States from Maine to New Mexico. By 1860, the eastern elk had been eliminated by hunters. By 1912, about 124 Roosevelt elk remained in northern California. Prairie Creek Redwood State Park became an elk refuge in 1923 where elk are common today.

Soil Stealing
While oceans contain most of Earth's carbon, about half stored on land in Redwood National and State Parks is in soils. The amount of carbon in the upper two meters of soil alone is 14 million metric tons. That's equal to 1 percent of total U.S. emission in a year.
